Tenerife in the Canary Islands has sunshine all through the year, miles of sandy beaches, beautiful mountains and startling volcanic landscapes. It is an ideal island for an active holiday with plenty of opportunity for walking in the glorious countryside or enjoying a wide range of water sports. Siam Water Park, Adeje

Siam Park is a new attraction in Tenerife, opened in 2008. The water rides in the park have Thai architecture as a backdrop. The floating market has the appearance of a traditional village with shops selling food and drink and offering Thai massages. Water activities include the Wave Palace which has the largest artificial waves in the world, at 3 meters. Visitors can paddle round the edges or jump right in! Enjoy the Naga Rider where you can slide on a mat down the Naga Snakes. Spin down the Mekong rapids in family sized rafts. Siam Beach is a large pool with a water temperature of 24 C and surrounded by palm trees and loungers. Climb to the top of the Tower of Power and free fall down 28 meters to be bottom! Siam Water Park is a great place for a day relaxing or a day of energetic activity.

Loro Parque

Loro Parque is a sister attraction to Siam Water Park. It opened in 1972 with 150 parrots and has now grown to house 4000 parrots as well as many other animals. The parrot collection is the largest in the world and the park is involved in study, conservation and breeding of various parrot species. Other animals which can be seen include dolphins, orcas, sharks, penguins, tigers, gorillas and chimps. After enjoying a meal at one of the many places to eat within the park, take a walk through the tree tops along a jungle walkway, or take a visit to the children’s playground. For plant loving visitors, there is a large collection of orchids including some of the rarest species of this beautiful plant.

Tenerife Zoo Monkey Park, Los Cristianos

The aim of this zoo, which opened to the public in 1992, is to protect and breed endangered species of primates. It describes itself as the biggest little zoo in the world. Besides monkeys, there are other animals to watch, including iguanas. It is possible to walk through the cages, visit the monkeys and feed them and some of the animals will perch on a shoulder or look in a bag for food. There are no cafes or shops selling souvenirs, so it is very different from some of the other visitor attractions, though they do sell food for feeding the animals. This is a great place to get close up to some of the animals and find out more about some of the world’s endangered primates.

Malasaña

North of Puerta del Sol, this lively neighbourhood leaves its visitors impressed. Full of bars, restaurants and clubs, there is no way you won’t find a good time in this part of the city. Lavapies

This part of town has just as much nightlife to offer as Malasaña, but with fewer tourists and Erasmus students and much more locals. That doesn’t mean you’ll be missing out on a mix of culture, however. The locals that live here come from all parts of the world with many hailing from Latin America. That explains the many Latin bars that call Laviepies home and if looking to dance some salsa or samba or even something more exotic then this is the place to go.

Chueca

As the gay community of Madrid, Chueca is full of bars and clubs open until the small hours of the morning. The whole city of Madrid is fairly gay-friendly in general, but here is the real home of the gay community. During the day a mix of designer stores and little boutiques makes for an interesting days shopping and a drink on one of Plaza de Chueca’s terraces afterwards is the perfect reward for your bargain hunting.

Salamanca

Madrid’s Old Town in the East of the city is fairly residential and you won’t find too many tourists here. That does mean, however, that you’ll find some typical Spanish restaurants at prices much cheaper than those in the heart of the city centre. Just be prepared to read and order in Spanish! English menus will be a rarity here.

You’ll find a bit of everything here in what is the centre of Madrid.
